Djokovic’s miracle
August 12, 2007 - Serb Novak “Nole” Djokovic prevented Switzerland’s Roger Federer from capturing his 50th career title by topping the No.1 player in the world, 7-6(2), 2-6, 7-6(2) in the two hour and 12 minute final of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.
Throughout the tournament, Djokovic knocked off the third, second and first players in the world – Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer – a feat that has not been accomplished on tour since 1994.
It was also the first time in five meetings that the Serb defeated Federer, but it’s safe to say that Djokovic, who will jump to No.3 in the world on Monday, is a different player today than he was before. As Nadal says: “This is the future No.1 player in the world.”
As far as Federer is concerned, he can only blame himself for the loss. The Swiss started off slowly, losing his serve right away to go down 3-0. Raising his level of play, he broke his opponent’s serve twice to go up 6-5 in the first set. Serving for the set at 40-0, Federer did something we never see and failed to convert his set points. As a result, Djokovic – after seven deuces – managed to force a tiebreak.
Still playing erratically, the five-time Wimbledon champion seemed disconcerted by his lost set points and dropped the tiebreak 7-2.
Djokovic’s lower level of play, coupled with a brief resurrection by Federer, made the second set a mere formality and it appeared that the Swiss had taken control of the match.
But that is without taking into account that the 20-year-old right-hander from Serbia has jumped from 280th to third in the world in less than two years. Unnerving Federer with his powerful serves and his flawless play at the baseline, Djokovic rapidly went ahead in the third set thanks to a break in the third game.
But Federer, an 11-time Grand Slam champion, would not go down quietly. He broke back in the eighth game, evening things up at 4-4.
Once again, the set went to a tiebreak. And once again, the Serb dominated, putting an end to a match that saw Federer commit 57 unforced errors – an unusually high number for the Swiss master.
The Rogers Cup presented by National Bank is the second Masters Series event on hard court Djokovic has won this year. He won earlier this year in Miami.
