POLITICAL MUSIC: OBAMA AND THE BLACK EYED PEAS
BRAD WHEELER
February 7, 2008
Not since General Douglas MacArthur's retreat from the Philippines have the words of the defeated offered so much hope. In an impassioned concession speech after his New Hampshire primary loss to Hillary Clinton in January, Barack Obama inspired many with his resolute "Yes we can" refrain. One of those moved by the junior senator's words was will.i.am, the Black Eyed Peas' front man. He has teamed up with director Jesse Dylan, son of provocative musician Bob Dylan, to produce a star-dotted music video that is racking up Internet hits faster than the dramatic hamster of 2007.
The video, which premiered Friday, has received more than 1.8 million visits on YouTube as of yesterday. Featuring a fedora-clad will.i.am and a range of celebrities such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Herbie Hancock, Scarlett Johansson and emotive crooners including John Legend, the piece includes excerpts from the speech, often with Obama's own words doubled by singers. The split-screen images are set to a lightly strummed soundtrack.
The video can be seen at http://www.dipdive.com/, where viewers can read about will.i.am's motivation behind a self-produced project that took two days to complete, with no co-ordination from the Obama campaign. After watching the speech, the pop musician set the candidate's words to a lithe melody. "It was all out of love and hope for change," will.i.am said.
Whether the Yes We Can video translates into votes remains to be seen. Obama's Super Tuesday losses to Clinton in California and New York revealed voters singing a different tune - a little ditty called No, Not So Fast.
