Novak the Magnificent?

Chris Farmer RSS / 04.07.2011. u 23:21

Let it come to no one as a surprise: Novak Djokovic did NOT walk on the moon.

Nor did he cure tuberculosis, invent the wheel, pave the Information Superhighway, or single-handedly create the heavens and the earth in six days. To my knowledge (and I could be wrong), Mr. Djokovic was not responsible for the breaking down of Apartheid, the lifting of the Iron Curtain, or the forging of lasting peace in the Middle East.

He may, of course, have assassinated Bin Laden. No one knows quite WHAT happened there...

If you look at Belgrade over the last couple of days, however, you may come to wonder what he actually did do. He has been welcomed home from London as a hero, a national icon, someone of whom statues will surely be erected somewhere in Serbia, someone about whom elegies will be versified. The president, usurping as much of the spotlight as the cameras would allow, calls him a role model for youth of Serbia.

(If I had a hat, I might remove it at this point.)

As it turns out, he won a lot of tennis. Tennis is a sport. A game, if you will. Certainly, it must be hard to win in a game which pits a lot of very good players against a lot of other very good players. I surely could not have done it, as any of my tennis partners would aver.

Moreover, many of the youth of Serbia to whom Novak the Super-Duper is a role model could not have done so either. This is notably, or so I am told, because the state does not allocate a lot of funds for individual sports such as tennis. We pay for basketball and football. Even water polo, I guess. In this way, I suppose the president is right: he is an example of how no one will help you until you are the world's number one and then they will try to take credit for it.

But let's be happy for Novak. After all, he did win. And he is the world number one for the moment. And let's be happy for ourselves too, since we live in the same country as he does. That must confer a little greatness on Serbia and, by extension, on the rest of us who live here.

After all, had he lost, he would have skulked into Nikola Tesla without fanfare, and it might have been just another Monday night in Belgrade. No kudos for second place here. Number Two is just number two.

I am aware that I shall not be making myself a lot of friends in my adopted homeland by nay-saying the apotheosis of Novak Djokovic. But, really, enough already. No conversation in these last days has strayed far from his name. None will be clear of Novaks and Noles for at least a couple of weeks. And God help us all if he maintains the pace through Flushing Meadows.

Yesterday evening, on the eve of the great victory, my son asked me if it was normal that people were riding on the top of their cars.

No, I said. It is not.

The World. Sadly yes.

What does it say about our species that an activity meant as recreation should take on such extremes of emotional involvement?

I will stick to backgammon, thanks.

Well, if you are indeed a backgammon type of guy, then you're not supposed to understand any of this.
I don't know, if I belonged to a nation who put a man on the moon (supposedly), maybe I wouldn't pay much attention on who won "a lot of tennis lately". But, for us in Serbia, this is something really big and important! Did we overdo it with the celebrations - yes, we did. But, you should have noticed by now that we are an "overdoing" nation, and we're not the only ones in the world...

I wrote the above after the Ladies’ Final – this final paragraph is written shortly after the end of the Gentlemen’s Final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djoković, which ended as I had wished and hoped, but not, I have to admit, as I had fully expected and when he lost the third set 1-6 after having won the first two 6-4 and 6-1, I began to think that the end was nigh. However, Novak showed what he has shown before, that he is a great fighter-back and succeeded in turning the tables just when it was necessary, and then keeping his cool and concentration until the very end. A magnificent champion, a wonderful person and a great ambassador for his country. I wish him a long reign as No. 1!!

4 July 2011 - BBC

A group of English tennis fans who could not get tickets to Wimbledon have been celebrating in Serbia after Novak Djokovic beat Spain's Rafa Nadal in the mens' singles final.

The streets of the capital, Belgrade, were virtually deserted during the battle between the world's top two players, with the UK Djokovic supporters wearing all-white to imitate the traditional Wimbledon kit.

Serbian fans also spoke of their joy at Djokovic's win.

Re: only..

I'm afraid you misunderstood this text completely. There is no bitterness in it, just plain common sense. And Serbia could certainly use some.

What is there to understand? That the people in Serbia identify with Novak's victories? That they see it as a great Serbian success as well as their own, thus trying to make up for a generally difficult life in Serbia? Of course it is ok to be happy about Novak, but this kind of national hysteria supported by the leading politicians is not only over the top, but also completely distasteful.

It is easy to say that Chris is a foreigner so he "doesn't understand". Well, I was born in Serbia, and I can't understand it any more than he can...

Small remark,

Chris, you are missing a point.

People here are so fed-up with problems and troubles, of hard life, and so hungry for ANYTHING nice which will give them opportunity to celebrate, that this kind of reaction to Novak it's absolutely normal.

I was on a highway today, with my youngest, and I can tell you, it WAS bit of overwhelming to see all those people, young and old, finally happy, finally smiling...

Maybe Novak's victory is not such a big thing, but, frankly, in this country, there are so few reasons to smile this days.

Don't worry, it will pass. Too soon.

Then there are baby-people who think that we, Serbs, will somehow become respected by the entity called The World because a Serb won in Wimbledon. In similar opinion we could achieve the same respect and prosperity if we put a man who attended British royal wedding to the throne.

Good point Chris

I love tennis and Novak made an amazing contribution to the sport. Many people think that with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic these are the best times in tennis ever. Those three look like the best in tennis ever and Novak dominates. 5:0 to Nadal in the season, what's more to say... and I keep talking about Wimbledon with friends who follow tennis because I'm truly impressed with Novak.

However, it's just tennis, just a game so this nation wide hype is ridiculous and silly. It's irritating to hear how people inflate the national importance of this title. Yeah, we live in great times for tennis fans but that's all.

I will never forget how soon after Red Star became champion of Europe black days came for Serbia - so much about link between success in sport and prosperity of a country.

- Klinci imaju uzor - prost obrazac: rad --> uspeh. I imaju ga po "zdravom protokolu", po uzoru na nekog kome ne zavide.

Itd, svi dočekuju izuzetne sportiste - kad budemo imali sedmog tenisera broj jedan u svetu opašće, adekvatno, i euforija pri svakom novom dočeku

Političari, ok, čak možemo i da ih ne primećujemo neko vreme, oni rade svoj "biznis", bar su ovde deseta rupa na svirali.

Well neither did Cassius Clay or Primo Carnera(land on the Moon)but are we to neglect their historical value and say they were just boxers. Well they were not, they were a lot more. They were an example of struggle for breed freedom and equality. After Carnera became champion in 1934 people in USA stooped to look at Italians just as thieves and tugs. And for Cassius, well his second name says it all. I guess that what some people in Serbia wont. Some kind of champion to represent them for World to see that we are not just "genocidal" maniacs. Someone with a reputation of a superstar and a Serbian background...But its wrong, its wrong what sport has become its wrong how media all over the world is manipulating with human emotions it's sad to see that 200 yrs after enlighten age we(all over the world) are still a mindless cattle ready to obey and to serve and to glorify WHAT, hitting a ball makes u a hero?!? I will probably never get it, when I start to criticize modern sport here in Serbia I get remarks like:"U never played anything haven't u?"(but i have, 5 different disciplines i fact). I guess that what modern sport is and what arena sport were just another panem et circumcises. And although I agree with you in most of your statements it's not just Serbia you should worry about it's the whole World I'm afraid.
PS. there are a lot of us personally dislike Joker in Serbia so you don't have to pack your bags as for exaggerating well like someone already sad that is who we are and personally u should get used to it. Without that kind of attitude there would be so many "good" traits in us and I hope u have seen them. Unfortunately you can't have one without the other.

Sure there are. You all work hard and earn your bread on making Serbia looking miserable and then comes a guy who with one swing of his racquet erases all your efforts and leaves your employes and finally you without hard earned finances...
I would also hate him in your shoes. Luckily enough I don't feed my kids by selling bullshit about my country, nor I pathologically hate it...

Re: sarme

Serbs do work hard, when we are paid for it . I'm sorry if not cheering for Novak makes me a traitor. But there it is I just don't like him maybe because hi has a bad attitude maybe because of his forehand, maybe becose I have worked on two projects during Serbia Open 2010 and had vary bad experience with the management, maybe because I have been Federer fan for so many years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRo72MUUZnE

Maybe because individuals are not representatives of our country or our people and they are praised more then their deserve while politicians cheer with them and at same time they recognize Kosovo IDs and every day we are deeper and deeper in... maybe because there are so many talented artist, scientist, poets and hard working people who deserve praise more and they don't get even a page in newspaper but when someone is NO1 at hitting ball over the he is a God? Ok hes the best so W.T.F. he will give some money to the charity and spend 5 times more on industry that pollutes same air that those orphans that he helped breathe. An people that his family put to work will be treated like slaves and reminded every day that almighty Djokovic family gave them breed(believe me i have seen that poor people) I obviously love my Serbia more then you do because I can not rest or cheer while there are so many in Serbia who can't buy toys for their kids. If we could eat and prosper from sport we would enjoy '90 wouldn't we. I remember how much i cheered 2002 when we won in basketball. But till what end? We need heroes and we need someone to be inspired. But my friend you are looking at the wrong direction. Heroes don't climb the mountain and shout :"LOOK AT ME AM THE BEST"
I am sorry but Novak victory was his own this nation this country had nothing to do with it. Having a bath in his victory is self delusion and that is a pathological condition.

Not everyone is materialistic. Some ppl can and like to be happy (at least for the moment) even though they are poor and don't have "great" life. Novak can obviously bring them that and you can't take them that away despite all your venom.
Pathological condition is to hate your neighbor for his success and to hate when other ppl are happy just coz you're miserable. 'Nough said...

Sir I hope you enjoy Novaks victory since you obviously lack your own. I never said I hate Novak or his victory or people that celebrate it I just said I choose not to(for that and that reason)celebrate(every creature with one brain cell would understand that). So please don't lead the witness or put false words in my mouth it's very rude and misleading but it is alright if that makes you feel better about yourself. But bitter man see evil even where there is none. I can't take Novaks victory from anyone because it is nonexistent it is an illusion but I am a Satan why listen to me right. Since you registered particularly for this topic it looked as a familiar scenario. A regular blogger (there are actually couple of the Federer fans between them ) couldn't take it any more, so he registered another nick to lick his wounds a bit .
However, now considering your writing style it's obvious you're just a kid (another Pocesta maybe ) who joined here to practice a bit blogging discussions and your English with grown-ups and also vent some frustration in the process coz your favorite Fedy lost (and not one of the long lasting "second Serbia" usual haters). Therefore, I can't be angry at you at all (even though I can't talk to you as to an adult). Somehow this "character reading" effort of yours was entertaining despite the fact you missed every single one of your assumptions .

Scot, Irish and German

"Novak Djokovic did NOT walk on the moon."

I almost heard you shouting USA, USA, Homer Simpson style.
But an American did, right? WRONG.

Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, to Stephen Koenig Armstrong and Viola Louise Engel.[2][3] He is of Scots-Irish and German descent (From Wikipedia).

Nice patriotic try. Sorry. Mister Armstrong is almost a Serb , asside the German part, ofcourse.

BTW, I missed the euforia about Novak. Had better things to do. My own how-to-survive-with-200 dinars-a-day life. But I dont mind people (mostly very young), having some fun on the street.
And when you talk, I feel like singing Marš na Drinu. Oh, and you can leave Serbia any time you want. One less marketing expert, or whatever, will not be a blow for our sad economy.

Perhaps Chris has already told this to his son. Perhaps he explained it to him in the same sentence by elaborating "from safety of the sky or from safety of the surrounding hills". Perhaps he also told him that usually "you reap what you sow". Perhaps he also said to him that whatever he becomes he should never be self-righteous, self-centred, cynical, misanthropic, I-Me-Mine bastard...

Hi Chris, here is another Serb who agrees with you. I am very happy for Nole but, as someone has already mentioned, yesterday's circus was stupid and distasteful. I can understand why our folks enjoy (over)doing it though; what I cannot understand is why he is (over)doing it? Becoming world no. 1 in tennis and winning Wimby must be overwhelming, but really, does it have to be like it was last night?

I guess that it bothers me because I feel that this exaggerated display of mass hysteria last night somehow marred his achievement which is GREAT in itself. I was delighted on Sunday evening - it is wonderful to see someone's dreams come true in front of your eyes. I wish he had gone to Sweden and come back only after the Davis Cup matches - I believe that we would have celebrated his victory much more gracefully.

Sports

I only watched the finals and I am glad that Novak won.I don't get that mass hysteria but that is how it is celebrated in Serbia.

Also, I am always perplexed when I see how many people tend to adore watching professional sport but they hate practicing any kind of sports.
I don't see anything bad in using someone's victory to promote your country and every country does that. We all know that Mika Pauli Häkkinen comes from Finland or Lance Armstrong from USA. It is also a matter of national pride. Imagine if Lance Armstorng switched from USA (Postal service) team to let's say team from Kazakhstan called Astana (oh no, that happened )
What I don't understand is when people overestimate the importance of professional sport on their lives instead of focusing on their own physical activity.

As most people I agree with a lot of stuff you wrote (mass hysteria, politicians, etc) except the introductory shit about Mahatma Gandi, Tesla and others.

I believe you when you tell us that you are devoted only to issues of utmost importance, only to those that have a worldwide effect, but be so kind and leave to the rest of us to be happy for his achievement. Although compared to yours it certainly cannot be viewed as magnificent, but what can ya do... Some people got it all.
lakipingvin lakipingvin 10:15 05.07.2011

Tiger Woods tilisibre??

Novak the Magnificent?

As friend of mine used to say"Its never question that's indiscreet only the answer."

He may, of course, have assassinated Bin Laden

Say what you mean and mean what you say but don't say it in a mean way.
I am aware that I shall not be making myself a lot of friends in my adopted homeland by nay-saying the apotheosis of Novak Djokovic.

I think wrong point of view but than again...Its not about having or not having friends but more of what works in the end.If return of Kaka to his favela in Brasil somehow inspire a teenager than narco-trafficer to say crime doesn't pay but computers do than i would say if same effect can have on only one single teenager in Serbia i think is well worth it all this madness...

Yesterday evening, on the eve of the great victory, my son asked me if it was normal that people were riding on the top of their cars.

In a country where when people practicing hard work you simple cant succeed, unless you are involved with some kind of partyocracy scheming, where richest and most influential people are marketing gurus, trange-frange specialist etc etc it is equal to miracle to see someone of us succeeding it this way as he did it but than again you wouldn't like that explanation to be heard from your son wouldn't you ?!
