"Bloggers now threatened as much as journalists"

Lucy Moore RSS / 18.10.2007. u 21:34

Reporters without borders released its annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index, with only Ukraine and Belarus ranking lower than Serbia among European states.  I was surprised to see just how far down the US ranked. Last year it actually came in below Serbia.

This year's report also concludes that bloggers are now threatened as much as journalists in traditional media -- a good sign for the power, though not comforting for the blogger.

An explanation of how the list was compiled can be found here

Komentare je moguće postavljati samo u prvih 7 dana, nakon čega se blog automatski zaključava

Important point...

...let us hope that this will not really discourage the bloggers from writing. BTW, since we have had cases of threats against bloggers even here, on this blog, I can hardly say I'm surprised... Thanks, Lucy!

But, it is unbelievable...

... that I have recently received warning about my writing, here, in the country which stands strongly and the most loudly about freedom of speech and press freedom, as well.

Financial pressure

It also measures the level of self-censorship in each country and the ability of the media to investigate and criticise. Financial pressure, which is increasingly common, is also assessed and incorporated into the final score.
How can this kind of influence on the freedom of written word, freedom of speech (or freedom of choice in any kind of activity in life) be measured? This kind of drive will always be present, not only in journalism, but also in any other kind of work.

Bloggers now threatened as much as journalists
Can this fact can be interpreted in the way that the influence of the blog media is approaching the level of journals influence (sounds like SF in a way)

Why tomorow?

...In Serbia tomorow?

In Serbia from Wednesday :). Two days ago our agency for the first time include one bloger in our media list and call him on press trip. He is specialist in the field of business software and his blog "Poslovni softver" is dedicated to that (Poslovni softver on Serbian means Busines Software on English). Occasion was appropriate because it was Open Day in MK IT Business Solutions (SAP partner), part of MK Group. Miodrag was very satisfied to meet SAP general manager for Western Balkan. Client and Agency are very satisfied with his report.

No.
In Serbia in six years.
That is "how far" (behind) in time are we (Serbia) from Croatia today.

I this aspect Serbia should trying to be far far away (in time and space) from Croatia... ( Ofcourse I am writting this with regard to the arresting of one blogger and one journalist described in S. Kusovec's last blog).

If it is going to happen at all, it will be in six years from now. That is how late we are.We share the space, but we do not share the time connected to different social processes (harassment and prosecuting bloggers included). What is happening to journalists today in Serbia, used to happen in Croatia six years ago.
I hope I made myself more clear.
My personal wish is to use Einstein definition of time connected with the speed of changes, but there are very few of us with that kind of wish....Maybe there will be more of us in six years from now... :))

Do you mean in six years we will have a Prime Minister in Serbia attacking the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and its judgements? Is that the progress that we need to wish for and follow to?

Croatia may be formally a few steps in front of Serbia in the process of getting the membership in the EU but the hole political situation and the real situation in the country is not far more different than in Serbia, in some questions, I would rather say, even worse!

I really don’t see this advantage and don’t understand this optimism about the situation in Croatia. Some of the OSCE observers in Croatia don’t see it also. Suppose we don’t look only the bride side of life!

Whatever I talk is based on looking "at picture as a whole" and figures describing social processes.
As for ICTY, the real news is that Croatia became a member of UN SC (non-permanent).
Maybe in six years we will be as well.
And OSCE mission is practically ended in Croatia, btw, there is no need anymore, not as it used to be profiled and not as it is here.
Since all of this is already a "troll", (sorry, Lucy) I will not discuss the issue anymore.
Your view - your choice.
See you in six years.. :))

I also have no intention to discuss the situation in Croatia in details, not the political nor the social one, I just don’t see it so optimistic.

Your opinion, your choice, of course.

And just a link to OSCE Mission to Croatia

Re: ---

Then, See You in six years, witahout any arrested bloggers and journalists (just because they profess ). : ]

PS
Did anyone point out that Kosovo is higher then Serbia on this list (as two separate positions, for this and for last yaer) ?

"It reflects the degree of freedom that journalists and news organisations enjoy in each country, and the efforts made by the authorities to respect and ensure respect for this freedom." (citation from the How the index was compiled).

Re: ---

I guess we here in Slovenia are 6 years ahead of Croatia with my optimistic estimate about their legal system change and denacification? OSCE should stay for a while in order to control return of Serbs.
